Humans are star dust, and so is the planet we inhabit. When stars collide, they send off many things into the surrounding universe, including a great deal of silica (a main ingredient in glass). When looking at human existence and interaction, glass has been a main ingredient for eons. It is so prevalent in the lives of humans that it has seeped into many places in daily life. Keeping veins elastic, coating buildings, inhabiting almost everyone’s pocket, worn for function and beauty alike, and the list goes on. Glass is human. It’s been there with us through many major discoveries and leaps forward. From clean drink wear to fiber optic networks that keep global communities connected like mycelium.
Traveling through the cosmos on a ship we call earth, I look up and out from the Unites States. Using many types of glass to reinterpret what function can mean and how objects can create lenses for understanding each other, and ultimately ourselves. Looking to where conversations are shared and introspection blossoms, I find that objects hold their own gravity. Drawing us in to experience a synergy, setting the scene for solo or group development.
Understanding that the big picture is the small picture, like a moment spent stargazing. Looking to the sky in a brief moment that includes the infinite. The objects at the center of a moment are with us in a similar way. There to serve seemingly small purposes but rooting us in a larger happening of life experience that can unfold the very fabric of the cosmos.
